Floridian Vampires

Having lived in Florida for just over a year now, frequently enjoying it as a place that is warm, active and occasionally fun, I sometimes forget how weird certain residents here can be. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised that yesterday was the first time a Floridian was mentioned in this blog, but now I guess there might be some catching up going on or something.

Recently, I came across the following Halloween news story about a growing subculture of dentally-aided, self-described "vampires living and periodically gathering in Southern Florida.

These "vampires" are an all too sad/common an example of strange people taking something that is very interesting in fantasy and remaking it into something lame by trying to incorporate it into their real lives and personal psychology. As much as I'd like to be open-minded enough to simply say "to each their own" as I do with many philosophies and subcultural behaviors, I simply can't help but to snicker a little at the thought of these people in action. It all reminds me of a certain South Park episode, per se... http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/210813

Christians hating on Halloween

Once again, far be it from me to knock someone's personal beliefs... but... according to the sanity-deficient fundamentalists featured in the news story below, among other things, now we've got to check our gummi bears and make sure they aren't really vampires? WTF?!?

*sigh*

In the end, all I can say to this story is a thank you to Reverend Lynn for offering a glimmer of sanity on the topic of a growing subculture somewhat responsible for over 40% of my country being convinced that evolution is elaborate fiction. :(
